Oscar Winner Diablo Cody writes in her blog that the film The Royal Tenenbaums can be boiled down to the friction created between Royal and Henry Sherman. While I appreciate the minimalist criticism. I too enjoy a good boiling down however, Wes Anderson's Tenenbaums is more of a slow simmer of a film.
Thinking of it rather as a cooking of a J.D. Salinger story allowing all the hidden themes to come to the surface. The film has far too many levels to be boiled down. Each character is a short story in and of his or herself. Tenenbaums becomes the final novel Salinger never published. The one where everything came flooding out. What happens when you put pressure on children that they cannot possibly live up to? This is something that Salinger himself is both victim and guilty of.
