A missing piece to the indie rock puzzle was discovered on Wednesday night at the troubadour in Hollywood. After missing two pretty great bands, Glass Candy and Panthers, Australia's Architecture in Helsinki took the stage. Time was wasted as the band took care of things that could have been figured out during sound check and I managed to finish a beer even before they started playing.
What happened next could have been predicted by listening to their most recent record which fails to come close to 2004's stellar In Case We Die. Moments of pleasure were avoided as the 7 piece band played not one song I would have liked to hear before I decided to leave early. Instead, AIH waxed and wained between 80s unconscious and the chic return to electro. While In Case We Die was full of moments of band geekiness and gushing over music appreciation 101, Places Like This manages to fall into the Dustbin of Indie-History.
It is told however that to truly appreciate this band one must resurrect the HBO unconscious and bring to the surface memories of the movie BMX Bandits where a young Nicole Kidman, cleverly outfoxes random goons trying to retrieve stolen walkie talkies. How 80s? There were several 6AM Saturday morning viewings of this film that had me practicing my G'Dies over a bowl of Cap'N Crunch long long before Paul Hogan was showing his knife or Bret and Jermaine were referencing it.
The night ended at the Cha Cha Lounge where I pissed off not one, but two bearded bartenders. No pictures were taken in the photobooth.

although outside the traditional "show review" perimeters, this is a very awesome review on the level of knowing you, sir.
Knowing how long it takes you to enjoy your beer to the max helps intensify how long it must have taken them to get their act together.
Your comparisons between the two albums are pretty on point as well.
The bmx reference is over my head, but who doesn't enjoy a bowl of the Cap'n?
