At first listen, Mahogany comes across sounding like a Canadian supergroup version of Belle & Sebastian; dense and layered on the outside, but frail and cute at the core. Track 1, “Tesseration” builds upon a utopian musical moment that in the words of the Kinks, sounds like something better beginning, but that is lost by the second track which has the beat of just about every indie rock dance song ever. Mahogany could at times be mistaken for The Go Team! or Architecture in Helsinki, but are different in that they somehow manage to sound epic and minimal. In a sense they are trying to do two things at once; the soft twee vocals and tight lyrical lines contrast the symphonic instrumentation. But this contrast is not a conflict, nor is it blending of styles. In fact, the title sums up what’s going on on this record nicely. The differing styles come together as a connection. There is a point where big sound and soft sound meet, and that point is Connectivity!.

I think this is a good review sir. Good because its short. Dominic was telling me about the value of short, concise reviews, and this seems to capture the essence of that. Just enough information, but not a long read, as if it were good for a magazine, so it could be consumed in a glance's worth of time.
