On Time Travel

There are stories of before and before and after. Things we know came before, but we only understand after. We understand pigeons as city birds, but what were they like before cities were built? To see a pigeon in its natural habitat would seem anachronistic, yet there is something very right about seeing the things in dumpsters and on subway platforms.
