I wanted to say something nice about The Ergs. The New Jersey punk band play pop punk in a way that I never thought would sound superfresh in 2007.
Their new record, Upstairs/Downstairs, is out on Dirtnap Records and shares similarities with other Northwest punk bands. The Empty Records family comes to mind as does Albuquerque New Mexico band, Scared of Chaka.
Although the Ergs 2006 EP Jersey’s Best Prancers pays homage to Lifetime, they hardly follow the Lifetime lineage like Saves the Day and more recently, Fall Out Boy.
Instead, The Ergs begin with the Ramones but filtered through the late 80s early 90s revival of Ramones-inspired pop punk like Lookout Records bands Screeching Weasel, The Queers and Mr. T Experience as well as more familiar to me, Pennsylvania bands, Weston, Plow United and NJ band, The Parasites. This style is best expressed by the title of the Dead Boys LP, Young, Loud & Snotty.
On the new record I hear more of the Gainsville style of pop punk which is a faster, heavier, and more gruff (See also, No Idea Records). Bands like Radon, Gunmoll and the Grabass Charlestons fit this description of beard punk.
So the Ergs are really good, unfortunately they’re not playing the west coast anytime soon.

i remeber a time when this would mean nothing to me, but now, good sir, i have a pretty good idea of what these boys would sound like without even listening to them. i guess now i too know my product...or yr product. one of those.
